Asian currencies gained strength as the U.S. dollar weakened. India proposed zero tariffs on steel, auto parts, and pharmaceuticals on a reciprocal basis within a set limit, while Malaysia noted the U.S. agreed to further talks that might include tariff cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said deals were \u201cvery close,\u201d echoing President Trump\u2019s earlier comments suggesting possible agreements this week. Chinese stocks resumed trading post-Labor Day amid signs of easing tensions between Washington and Beijing. The CSI 300 gained 0.95%, and Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng rose 0.67%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, China\u2019s Caixin services PMI slipped to a seven-month low of 50.7 in April, down from 51.9. In India, the Nifty 50 dipped 0.15%, while the BSE Sensex edged up 0.14%. Australia\u2019s S&amp;P\/ASX 200 remained flat. Markets in Japan and South Korea were closed for holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures stayed flat ahead of the Federal Reserve\u2019s policy meeting, the first since President Trump\u2019s announcement of \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs. A rate decision is expected Wednesday, with futures suggesting only a 2.7% chance of a rate cut. Erik Weisman of MFS Investment Management anticipates Fed Chair Jerome Powell will maintain a cautious stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, U.S. stocks ended lower, breaking the S&amp;P 500\u2019s nine-day winning streak.
